Michael Magers "Independent Mysteries"
DELTA is delighted to present the exhibition “Independent Mysteries” by Michael Magers, one of the winners of DELTA’s open call in 2021 for submissions. For the exhibition, Magers selected twenty photographs from his eponymous photobook of street photography from around the world, and arranged them in a horizontal layout reminiscent of traditional picture scrolls.
Despite the differences in time and locality, the various motifs in each of Magers’ works overlap in various unusual ways and layers. A girl caught through the window of a bus in one shot becomes linked with the snake in a glass cage seen in another photo, with glass seemingly transformed into a device separating the self from the outside. Magers’ photographs and their combinations prompt us to imagine ways in which to perceive the world surrounding the girl.
While each of Magers’ images carries its own independent world and story, their scroll-like arrangement lets hidden connections, intentions and disconnections emerge from the spaces between the photographs.
