KYOTOGRAPHIE SCÉNOGRAPHIE

Each year in spring, KYOTOGRAPHIE takes place in Kyoto, one of the world’s leading cities of art and culture. It is one of only several international photography festivals around the world. What distinguishes KYOTOGRAPHIE from similar events is its focus on “scenography” — using spatial design to utilize the individual identities of each exhibition space, whether they are based in historical buildings or contemporary architecture.

This exhibition aims to deepen the understanding of scenographic design by introducing how spatial design is used to create impressive artistic experiences. Split into two exhibition periods, we focus on space designer Hiromitsu Kinonishi and architect Katsuhiko Endo, who have been collaborating with KYOTOGRAPHIE for years, and will showcase the processes behind some of their scenographic designs.

The Hiromitsu Konishi exhibition (February 26 ー March 16, 2021) looks back at Konishi’s scenographies, from the Sohei Nishino exhibition “Diorama Map” at the second edition of KYOTOGRAPHIE in 2014 to last year’s Marie Liesse exhibition “Story of a Bridge Between Two Worlds”, and offers a look at the processes of spatial design as well as a chronological archive.

The Katsuhiko Endo exhibition (March 20 ー April 6, 2021) focuses on 2019’s Alfred Ehrhardt exhibition “The Forms of Nature ― 100 Years Bauhaus” as well as the Wing Shya exhibition “One Light, Different Reflections” in 2020 and features previously unseen design plans and mockups used during the creation of his scenographies.

We hope that these exhibitions allow visitors to experience the manifold possibilities emerging from the interplay between photography and architecture, and help deepen the understanding of scenographic design.

Additionally, for this year’s KYOTOGRAPHIE 2021 we are holding a competition calling for a scenographic design for the “KYOTOGRAPHIE Information Center” that is set up during the festival. More information: https://www.kyotographie.jp/news/#id6112
