DELTA is pleased to present this solo exhibition by Guillaume Holzer, winner of the DELTA/KYOTOGRAPHIE 2023 Open Call.
Guillaume Holzer, an artist based in Paris, delves into the thematic elements of space, limits, movement, and disappearance through both the photographic medium and the subject matter he engages with.
In his “NOMADISM” series, Holzer undertakes an exploration of nomadism and freedom, encapsulating the culmination of eight years of his life spent in Indonesia with the “sea nomads” dedicated to coral conservation. This project serves as a journey into the relationship between place, mobility and identity, encouraging audiences to embark on a narrative journey that traces the historical evolution of the Bajau and Bugis communities and their perspectives on nomadism.
The exhibition will showcase prints on handmade Japanese Washi paper and the artist’s limited edition art book. Thus to invite audiences to explore different angles and gain insights into the stories behind the photographs as part of Holzer’s ongoing research.
▍Guillaume Holzer
His work explores themes of space, limits, movement, and disappearance both through the photographic medium and the subject matter. At the same time, he looks for scenes that evoke a sense of nostalgia and timelessness. He likes to manufacture his photographic support, emulsifying by hand which retains the trace of the brush, the irregularities of its passage, and the texture of the paper. This work on the material of the print is a constant research. At the age of 20, he started a 10-year-long journey. After studying economics in the UK and Australia, he cofounded an NGO dedicated to coral reef conservation and worked in various countries with tribal communities like the First Nation in British Columbia, the Bajau in Komodo, and the Rapa Nui in Easter Island. In 2017 he settled back in Paris, studied at the Louvre, and integrated Éric Guglielmi’s laboratory in Paris where he deepened his technical knowledge of photographic processes.
