The KYOTOGRAPHIE 12th edition (2024.04.13 – 2024.05.12) explored the theme “SOURCE” over 13 exhibitions in 12 iconic venues across Kyoto City.
The source is the beginning, the initiator, the origin of all things. It is the creation of life, a place where conflict arises or freedom is obtained; it is the space in which something is found, born, or created. Regardless of our life’s juncture, we stand at a crossroads, oscillating between returning to the primal origin and beginning something new. It is from this sacred space that the symphony of life, love, and pain reverberates. In 2024, we explore SOURCE, seeking the opportunities they signal for an alternative future.

KYOTOGRAPHIE Kyoto International Photography Festival
For over a decade I have photographed the KYOTOGRAPHIE Kyoto International Photography Festival as an avid fan and a staff member. When capturing this year’s festival, I was drawn to how the audience was captivated, often in awe, as they interacted with the artworks on display and the times and spaces they coexisted within. Each artwork would force them to a crossroads as they paused momentarily, lost in traces of thoughts or reflections.
KYOTOGRAPHIE has long been a source of inspiration for many, including the team that works tirelessly every year to bring it to life amongst an ever-growing audience. Bringing new perspectives and stories to Kyoto by highly acclaimed artists from around the world, the festival drives and, more importantly in my eyes, dares visitors to express their unique perspectives and stories. It’s a perpetual cycle where the end becomes the beginning.
