KYOTOGRAPHIE Inside-Out|Photographs by Hiroshi Yamauchi

In 2023, the KYOTOGRAPHIE International Photography Festival took place in Kyoto for the eleventh time. For four weeks between April and May, more than 240’000 visitors from Japan and all over the world visited photography exhibitions held in nineteen locations—among them local cultural institutions, temples, traditional townhouses and World Heritage sites— throughout the city of Kyoto.

Following this year’s theme “BORDER”, the participating artists examine the various ways in which invisible boundaries manifest between people in our world, from national borders to divisions based on gender or culture.

One of KYOTOGRAPHIE’s defining aspects as an international art festival is the careful selection and design of its individual venues. The locations and exhibitions have been carefully designed to allow visitors to approach photography from multiple angles as they explore Kyoto’s streets.

Further, the festival features a range of public programs geared towards its diverse audience, including symposiums and talk event with participating artists, kids’ programs for younger visitors, and master classes and a portfolio review aimed at established and emerging photographers.

Since its first edition in 2013, KYOTOGRAPHIE aims to foster an open, international culture around photography and to create a platform for people to meet and engage with each other.

In this exhibition at DELTA, we look back at this year’s KYOTOGRAPHIE through snapshot photographs taken by Japanese photographer and KYOTOGRAPHIE staff member Hiroshi Yamauchi. Closing Report available at the venue allow for a deeper dive into KYOTOGRAPHIE 2023.
