DELTA/KYOTOGRAPHIE Permanent Space presents “Intersum,” a solo exhibition by Miyo Ogawa.
Ogawa imbues temporal elements, lingering impressions, and a reality captured in the sense of absence inherent in photos through the medium of photography in diverse forms, such as two-dimensional works, installations, and video.
This exhibition showcases new work from the series “re-record”, in which Ogawa induces material changes by heating film that she has photographed and developed. The series explores the phenomenon of how film itself continues to transform even after an initial image is fixed, a process of adding something new through the application of heat. Ogawa then replicates parts of the film using a digital camera to present works in color. Due to the excessive force applied, it becomes impossible for us to decipher, or even imagine, what was captured by the artist’s lens from the vibrant visuals reminiscent of underwater shots.
The title of this exhibition, “Intersum”, meaning “to be between” in Latin, is quoted from Roland Barthes’ book “Camera Lucida”, which he interprets as signifying the essence of photography: the “that-has-been”.
The new works presented in this exhibition focus on photographs utilizing the technique of photograms, showcasing film that has become a “memory object” of what has been, and is no longer.
