Makino Tomoko "We never know what was good until life is over"

DELTA is proud to present “We never know what was good until life is over,” a solo exhibition by KG+2023 Discovery Award winner Tomoko Makino.

After the death of her father, an offhand remark from her mother prompted Makino to reflect on the way we mourn our loved ones. Her own way of mourning involves taking objects left behind by the deceased and using them to create new works of art that expand our imagination and go beyond the objects’ original meaning. Rather than carefully storing heirlooms and mementos in boxes, Makino takes them out and remembers the deceased, thereby giving them new life and meaning. Through her colourful images, she invites the audience to contemplate the personality and afterlife of the objects’ owners, perhaps as a shared act of mourning. In a careful and imaginative way, her series creates new bridges between the deceased and those left behind.

At DELTA, Tomoko Makino’s series will be exhibited against the backdrop of a black and white striped curtain traditionally used in Japanese ceremonies of celebration and mourning.
